​Huizhou Carvings

Huizhou carving, renowned for its woodcarving, brick carving, and stone carving in the Huizhou region, is one of the outstanding representatives of traditional Chinese folk arts and crafts. These carving arts not only possess strong decorative qualities but also convey rich historical culture and aesthetic spirit. They are widely used in ancient residences, ancestral halls, gardens, and other buildings, embodying the Confucian principles of "loyalty and forgiveness" and "harmony is precious."

History: The Development of Wood Carving, Brick Carving and Stone Carving in Huizhou

​Wood Carving 

This art form originated in the Tang Dynasty and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

It is primarily used on beams, columns, doors, windows, eaves, and other structures, with themes typically featuring auspicious patterns, historical figures, opera stories, and similar motifs.​

​Brick Carving 

This art form originated in the Song Dynasty and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

​Brick carving is frequently used for residential gates and screen walls. Due to its delicate craftsmanship and unique grey brick material, brick carving exhibits rich expressiveness.​

​Stone Carving 

This art form originated in the Song Dynasty and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Stone carving is primarily used for bridges, archways, cemeteries, step railings, and similar structures. In the early days, it was mostly practical decoration, and later gradually incorporated artistic value.​
